Get iPod Touch/iPhone Working in Windows 7 x64

itunes-logo[1] One thing I noticed rather quickly with this build was that the iPod Touch does not seem to work out of the box in iTunes.  At first I didn’t mind, but then there was added pressure when my brother snatched my 6801 DVD and installed it on his machine and then came to me to get his iPod Touch working.  So of course this started a quest to do what many others wrote off as impossible.  Well, I’m here to tell you that it is NOT impossible, it just requires a little know how and willingness to do some things manually.  So let’s get to it shall we?

NOTE: Everything you need to know to make this work is in the following guide, if yours isn’t working, you did something wrong, so read it over again because you probably missed a step.

What you will need:

  • Latest iTunes x64 release from apple.com
  • Installed copy of iTunes on a Vista x64 system available to you
  • Basic knowledge of installing drivers in Windows

Ok, so first off, you obviously need to install iTunes.  Install it as you normally would and let it do it’s thing.  Once you have done that, you will notice the following error if you try to start iTunes with your iPod Touch plugged in:

error

The reason this happens is because the iTunes installer does not install the Mobile Device Support component which is necessary for the iPod Touch to work correctly.  To remedy this issue do the following:

  1. Copy the “Mobile Device Support” directory from your Vista system to the same location on your 7 system (Located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\).
  2. Once you have done that, we need to merge the appropriate registry entries so the services actually work.  Merge THIS registry file and allow all UAC prompts.
  3. Once that is done, now we need to move on to the hardest part of the whole process.  Installing the correct driver for the iPod Touch.  Windows 7 incorrectly sees the device as a digital camera, so we need to fix this manually.  To do this head into the device manager and select the iPod (see screenshots below).

    devmgmt1

Once you have done that, right click and go to “Update Driver”.  You will now see this:

    driver1

Select “Browse my computer for driver software”.  Now you should see this:

    driver2

Click the button highlighted (hint: it’s the Let me pick… Button).

When the prompt comes up, click have disk and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers\

After doing that click OK and you should see this:

    driver3

Click Next and the driver will install.

Finally, reboot your computer to allow the Mobile device service to start, and plug in your iPod Touch and fire up iTunes.  Your device should now work exactly as it should.  Enjoy!

Thank you for this guide. Short of installing windows vista, then installing iTunes, then reinstalling windows 7 i can’t see how i can get the AMDS directory. Could you post a link to a archive of the directory from windows vista. many thanks.

    Hi Chris,

Great Job!!! I thought that would work but didn’t have the files at hand / time to do it.
How did you figure the keys that needed to be udpated in the registry; Orca on the MSI?

Would you happen to know how to install MobileMe64.msi?

    Cheers!

    Hi,

Have you had any luck with iTunes 8.0.2 to the same end?

    Thanks,

    Chris

I noticed this isn’t working with itunes 8.0.2. Thanks for the heads up though. It seems that once you’ve installed itunes once in 7, the MSI won’t work again. Looking into it now. Who thought something could be so complicated lol.

Yes, I got iTunes 8.0.2 install on Windows 7 x64.

I had previously install iTunes 8.0.1 but can’t update so I uninstall 8.0.1 but unfortunately, now neither iTunes 8.0.1 or 8.0.2 would install as it run into an error.

What you will need: WinRAR or 7-Zip and Orca (download Orca here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Authoring-tools/Setup-creators/Orca.shtml)

    1. Extract iTunes64Setup_v8.0.2.20.exe using WinRAR or 7-Zip
    2. Right click on iTunes64.msi and click Edit with Orca
    3. In the Tables (left), right click on Error and click Drop Table… and click yes.
    4. Save the file.

    Enjoy iTunes 8.0.2 x64 on Windows 7

    Mark,

Good bit of info, but I just tested it and it does not work. The MSI just errors out right away with your method.

    Mark and Chris,
Here is the solution to running itunes 8.0.2 on Windows 7 x64. After installing iTunes, follow all the steps above, and then open regedit. From the root, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Apple Inc.\Apple Mobile Device Support]
. Change the version number to 2.12.33.0. Reboot the machine or restart the service, and wa-la!!! Suddenly your ipod or iphone will appear and sync flawlessly.

or.. an even easier way, would be to change the version number for AMDS in Chris’s registry file, and then merge it in. As a mater of fact, that is probably a better way of doing it.

The problem is installing the AMDS portion of the install without Vista. The rapidshare link above no longer works. I’ve tried importing the modded reg key, playing around with the AMDS msi file on Orca, older versions of Itunes, but still I get the error when I connect my Ipod. In fact, the AMDS installer does not complete and does not create the directory.

Anyone willing to post a link to a working AMDS folder?

    Thanks

Does anyone have any luck with iTunes 8 x64 on Windows 7 build 6936 x64? Windows 7 build 6936 x64 detect invalid driver signature + internet radio doesn’t work. “An error occurred while contacting the radio tuning service. Check your Internet connection, or try again later.” Press F8 > Disable driver signature Enforcement is overkill + internet radio still doesn’t work.

Unrelated, does Chris get prompt that he got new comments or does he come check every one of his post?

So far, the Beta (build 7000) along with the latest Windows 64 bit version of iTunes is working – although I say that prematurely as it’s currently progressing through the “Backing up my iPod”…

Does anyone know how to overcome a similar problem with Windows 7 x32 and the iphone?
I installed Windows 7 and everything was perfect until I plugged in my iPhone. It started doing a driver search. After a few minutes I cancelled the search because I had to do something else. Now when I plug in the iPhone the computer gives the ‘just plugged in a device, now wait until it is paired with its driver’ sound, but then it gives up after about 30 seconds with its ‘device is unplugged’ sound. Attempts to get the computer to locate the device with an Add Hardware, device search were useless (although it did find a neighbor’s bluetooth phone).

    Help!

On Windows 7 Build 7000 & iTunes 8.0.2 all this “dancings with buben” isn’t needed…
I have just 2 little problems:
    1) iTunes installer freeze on 2/3 of his work… I go to Task Manager and kill “DifXInstall64.exe” process… after that installer finish his work…
    2) computer not recognize my iPhone until I restart it (computer, not iPhone)… after that all works normally

Had the same problem as above. Try downloading iTunes again. Seems Apple made a small update in the last couple of days to 8.02 and when I reinstalled it on Beta 7000 it now picks up my iPhone with none of the fixes above. Just in time to get 2.21. I’m running x64.

I found even with the latest itunes my iphone still didn’t work and showed up as a digital camera till I went in device manager –> properties on the iphone (under portable devices) –> Update drivers –> Automatically update drivers.

    Then it worked!

FYI: just tried to sync my ipod touch with Windows 7 64-bit for the first time and it didn’t work at first. However, I kept the ipod plugged into the computer and after a few minutes Windows 7 magically installed the right driver and it’s working fine now.

    strange, but yay!

7068 was the worst, my wife’s iPhone froze badly! I couldn’t get restore to complete untill I installed built 7077 64bit. I guess that’s why it’s called RC :D

    May 22nd, 2009 at 15:12 | #38

I had problems too with RC 7100 and my iPod Touch. Tried this hack as well and didn’t help. I had some instability issues and did a complete reinstall of Win 7 and then iTunes and the second time around it just worked (well except for photos syncing). Have no idea why. I do know that the install takes “virgin” iPods much better than filled up ones, so for my other iPods I’ve restored them on other computers then linked them to the new install

Ok here is my problem. I updated from vista to windows 7 3 days ago and on vista my ipod was working just fine. Downloaded the drivers and Itune now see my ipod. But is still have the messages that my ipod as expired appearing

  41. June 7th, 2009 at 23:42 | #41

Using Windows 7 7100 32-bit. Have an ipod touch 2G. To fix the install here were my steps:

-Download and install itunes 8.1.1, run in compatibility mode for vista and with administrator access

-Uninstall itunes 8.1.1 (mobile device support remains)

-Install 8.2 with same compatibility mode and administrator access (no error messages appear during installation)

-To get ipod touch recognized by itunes, connect ipod, open up device manager and uninstall the current apple ipod driver (it’s an incorrect photo driver)

-Open itunes and connect ipod touch, it will be recognized by itunes now.

***you might want to throw in a few restarts here and there
