Well I’m back! I know it’s been a while since I posted, but this summer has been hectic to say the least. End of June/Beginning of July was miserable (my Grandmother passed away). But at least the rest of the summer ended up being great thanks to a very good new friend of mine (you know who you are).
Anyway, the real reason for this post. The other day I was reading through the September 2007 issue of PC world and couldn’t help but notice that they ran an article on how to “turbocharge Vista”. As I was reading it I noticed that they were recommending that users disable unneeded services and were referring them to BlackViper’s site for a guideline on doing so. So I went to BV’s site and started looking at his service tweak guide (which have been known to be very good). While going through it however, I couldn’t help but pick up on the fact that he doesn’t seem to have a full grasp of what the various services in Vista are used for. In his guide he recommends turning off the “Application Experience Service” which has the ill fated side affect of disabling any kind of compatibility mode you should have to use for your apps. He also has people disable other things such as the search indexer which completely defeats the purpose of running Vista. If you’re going to disable the new search and some of the other new features just do yourself a favor, save the money, and stick with XP.
I just had to get that out of my system. I’m not necessarily trying to bash on BlackViper, I’m just merely pointing out that his understanding of Vista services seems to be a bit sub-par.
